Every year when spring break rolls around, people travel all over and a common place for a lot of students to end up is somewhere in Florida to hang out on the beach and have a good time. Along with the large group, the varsity baseball team heads down but for a slightly different reason.

The National Classic Baseball Tournament is held annually in Ft. Lauderdale during the spring and the baseball players give up their break to play the game they love. This year, the team went undefeated the first three days, taking them to the championship on Thursday.

Starting off the week, the Knights played Lane Tech from Illinois. During this game, Matthew Siverling led the team in hits and Jonathan Jagielski drove in five of the team’s fourteen runs.

On Tuesday, the team faced Lemont High School, also from Illinois. JT Killen pitched a great game, only allowing two runs over four innings. JT also led the team in hits along with Matt Mayers aiding in the 5-2 win.

The next win was on Wednesday when the Knights faced Miami Christian with a final score of 4-2. Matthew Siverling started on the mound and held Miami Christian to no runs with 11 strikeouts in 5 innings. Trey Donathan led the team in hits.

The final matchup of the tournament was on Thursday between the Knights and the Eagles of Stoneman Douglas. This game was quite the fight, but the Knights came out on top with a 9-6 victory. Throughout the game, the Eagles went through four pitchers, while Jonathan Jagielski and Shane Russell led the Knights from the mound; Matthew Siverling led the Knights at the plate.

As you may know, Stoneman Douglas is the high school that was the victim of the shooting in Parkland, Florida, earlier this year. To finish out the tournament, the Knights presented the Eagles with a bat they had signed to honor the lives that were lost with “#MSDStrong” written on the barrel.

We are so proud of the Varsity Baseball team for winning this tournament for the 5th consecutive year. Go Knights!
